It already made headlines when news broke that Meghan Markle would be spending Christmas at the Queen’s Sandringham Estate with the Royal Family. Normally only official family members are invited and not even Kate attended until after she married William.
So it begs the question, just what did the soon-to-be Royal bring as a Christmas gift for the Queen? Surely she already has everything she could want, so what does one buy the person who has everything? Well, Christmas with the Royal Family is a little different than how most people celebrate. The Queen likes to honor her German heritage and incorporates many German traditions into the festivities. One of which is opening presents on Christmas Eve. On Christmas Eve, after the youngest members of the family put the finishing touches on the Christmas tree, presents will be opened during tea time. All the gifts are laid out in the Red Drawing Room on a trestle table. But without a doubt, Meghan Markle was incredibly nervous this Christmas, as it was the first time she had spent such a long period of time with the soon-to-be in-laws. This video was captured on Christmas Day, as cameras captured the nervous actress attending church with the Royals:
In fact, if you look closely (2:30 mark) you can even see the moment Kate Middleton showed the inexperienced Markle how to curtsy to Her Majesty. Because the Queen already has everything, it has become a tradition for the Royals to buy each other gag gifts or small and cheap items that provide a laugh. The Queen enjoys receiving items that she finds funny. Allegedly, Princess Anne once gave Prince Charles a white leather toilet seat, Kate previously gave Harry a “grow your own girlfriend” kit, which he definitely no longer needs, and Harry even gave his grandmother the Queen a shower cap printed with the words “Ain’t life a b*tch?” However, some members of the family don’t feel comfortable with the gag gift tradition, and Kate, after struggling to find a suitable gift, opted to once give her grandmother-in-law some homemade chutney. So which way did Meghan go? Practical or funny? Well, considering she is Harry’s girl, Meghan took the risk and opted for a ridiculous gag gift for the Queen. Reportedly, the Queen loved Meghan’s gift, despite giving it to her dogs. According to a source, Meghan gifted the Queen with a singing stuffed hampster, and Her Royal Majesty was absolutely delighted. The Daily Star Online reported that the Queen burst into laughter as one of her prized corgis snatched the toy away. The Source revealed, “Meghan bought a little hamster that sings with a little rope for Her Majesty. It was so funny, especially when the corgis tried to take hold of the toy. [The Queen] laughed and said ‘they can keep my dogs company’.” It seems as though Meghan is making quite a favorable impression with her soon-to-be Royal in-laws. If we could all buy our in-laws a singing stuffed hampster for Christmas, I think the holidays would be a lot less stressful! Though if I did that I know I’d be the one in the doghouse, not the plushie. Christmas with the in-laws can be a nervewracking thing, but I think Meghan has certainly earned her place around the dinner table.
