12 Men Escape An Alabama Prison After Using Peanut Butter To Confuse Guard

Twelve inmates escaped from a jail in Alabama on Sunday, using an incredibly unusual method to break out. The Walker County Jail is located in Jasper, Alabama, which is around 35 miles northwest of Birmingham. The county jail was opened in 1998 and currently houses around 240 inmates, according to the Sheriff.

Some of the prisoners took off on foot, while some of the escapees reportedly got into a car. Police offered a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest for two of the inmates, who were incarcerated for attempted murder. The fugitives are aged between 18 and 30, with charges ranging from the aforementioned attempted murder to disorderly conduct. The escape happened at around 6:30 pm CDT (Central Daylight Time) on Sunday, and all the men had apparently cleared the barbed wire fence and escaped the ground in less than 10 minutes. All but one of the inmates have since been captured within a few hours of the jailbreak, but one man still remains at large. So how did this happen? It turns out these inmates didn’t need force, or a weapon of any kind to make their escape. Walker County Sheriff James Underwood said the dozen escapees got out by covering up the numbers identifying an outside door with peanut butter, then called for a newly-employed guard watching them on CCTV to open it from his control booth so they could get in their cells. The new guard, unfamiliar with the layout and routine work of the institution, believed that they were just impatient to enter their cells and so unlocked that door from his control booth. Unknowingly, the door he had opened lead to the outside world, and the prisoners promptly escaped. At a news conference, Sheriff Underwood made a statement to the press: “Changing numbers on doors with peanut butter – It may sound crazy, but these kinds of people are crazy like a fox. He thought he was opening the cell door for this man to go in his cell, but in fact he opened up the outside door.” “Escapes happen. We’ve got some evil people down here, and they scheme all the time to con us and our employees at the jail. You’ve got to stay on your toes. This is one time we slipped up. I’m not going to make any excuses. It was a human error that caused this to happen. Hes a young guy, hadnt been here that long” A manhunt is still in effect, with airborne help from a state helicopter. They are searching for the last man – Bradley Andrew Kilpatrick. The 24-year-old had been arrested for possessing marijuana and other drug paraphernalia. Off-duty personnel have been enlisted in the search for Kilpatrick alongside the Jasper Police Department. No one was hurt in the incident, with the most serious injury being one inmate who sliced his thumb open while climbing over a razor-wire fence. They expect to have Kilpatrick captured and back in custody soon, hopefully by the end of the day.
